PERFORMING IN THE GOLDEN YEARS, JUST SURVIVE OR REALLY THRIVE?
The Golden Years (age 65+) place special demands on organist-performers. To thrive (instead of just survive) requires understanding physiologic changes and developing new ways to approach practice and performance. The presenter is a Medical Doctor, now in her 82st year of life, with a strong background in organ performance and personal experience in TGY (The Golden Years). After retirement from 30 years practicing Internal Medicine in Pasadena, she returned to organ playing with enthusiasm, focus and discipline. In a fast-paced and humorous workshop, she will present examples of "older" performers, review the physiology of "aging", and show participants how to thrive as organist-performers in the Golden Years.

Re-dedication of the refurbished Reuter Organ at Nichols Hills United Methodist Church, Oklahoma City OK, was attended by a standing-room only crowd who responded enthusiastically to the music. The world premiere of Oklahoma composer, Callen Clarke's, "Meditation" for violin and organ was received with a standing ovation. I was thrilled by the energy between violinist, Kyle Dillingham, and myself, and by the unusual composition. After the last piece, Messiaen's "Outburst of Joy", the audience again responded with a standing ovation. A fine reception followed hosting by the descendants of the original attendees back in 1963. Several friends came from California just for the event. It was a wonderful return "home" to my roots. An experience I shall never forget.

On a very hot afternoon, three hundred fifty organists and guests attended my concert at First Congregational Church Berkeley CA on Wed. July 6, 2011. I've never played for such an enthusiastic group! I felt they were with me all the way despite the heat. (And I wore heavier clothing for 65 degree weather!). Although my hands were sticky from the heat, the program went very well and the marvelous Petty-Madden Pipe Organ spoke out in full glory.
It was a wonderful experience and especially so as I saw so many old friends there.
The most poignant event, however, was my return to the same place where I played my AGO National Competition Winner's recital in 1952 - almost 60 years ago! The organ is new and the chancel has been revised, but it was the same space. Now I finally understand T.S. Eliot's poem, "and the result of all our exploration will be to return to where we started and know the place for the first time."

Despite problems with the swell shutters which were fixed just moments before show time, the organ performed perfectly. A CD recorded during this performance will be released by RAECD soon and available on www.cdbaby.com.

Encore Bach - In dir ist Freude
This event was well attended by a select and enthusiastic audience. I was pressed for rehearsal time as the church service ended at noon and I had about an hour to do a quick review of the very complex instrument. But all seemed to go well. We used two recording setups and audio edit is in process.
For my lecture-recitals, I try to give the audience some background about the composer and the piece, interesting historical and personal details. It helps understanding.
The wonderful five manual Casavant organ has such beautiful resources for a program of grand, romantic music.
